National VA Parkinson's Disease Network

History & Mission

Our Mission…

To support the provision of optimal care for veterans diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and related movement disorders through professional education, collaboration and advocacy.

The National VA Parkinson’s Disease Network (VA PD Network) was established in 2003 to broaden the impact of the Parkinson’s  Disease Research, Education and Clinical Centers (PADRECCs) and encourage the delivery of modern Parkinson’s disease management across the collective VA Healthcare System.  While the PADRECCs serve as designated Centers of Excellence, the VA PD Network aims to revolutionize clinical care at unique VA Medical Centers via professional education, collaboration, and peer support.   All VA clinicians, including movement disorder specialists, neurologists, gerontologists, general internists, practitioners, and other allied health professionals, are invited and encouraged to join in this paramount campaign.  Membership grants access to valuable patient resources and provider educational materials.

The VA PD Network was launched in April 2003 with approximately 75 VA clinicians selected from across the VA Healthcare System. In September, 2006 the concept of "PADRECC Associated Sites" was created and presented at a national conference held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Since that time, the VA PD Network continues to hold bi-annual conferences. These national gatherings have solidified the purpose and impact of the VA PD Network through the provision of education, training, and collaboration.

The established PADRECC Associated Sites ensure accessibility and continuity of specialized care for veterans afflicted by parkinsonism, regardless of locality.  The Associated Sites offer movement disorder clinics staffed by a movement disorder specialist or a neurology clinician. Together, the PADRECCs and Associated Sites create a hub and spoke model of care that is thus far unprecedented in the VA system.  Veterans who cannot access direct care at a PADRECC facility can be evaluated and treated at the closest Associated Site in their region. Click here to locate an Associated Site . The National VA Parkinson’s Disease Network is a distinguished society of VA providers who are deeply committed to veterans living with Parkinson’s disease and related disorders.  The PADRECCs and Associated Sites proudly promote the VA as a leader in the international Parkinson community.

General Membership

All clinicians employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs who serve veterans with Parkinson's disease and related disorders (regardless of capacity) are invited to become a member of the National VA Parkinson’s Disease Network. Membership is free and grants access to a variety of Parkinson’s disease resources. General membership does not require participation as an Associated Site. You can register today by completing and forwarding the application below.

PADRECC Associated Site Designation
PADRECC Associate Site designations are dependent on several factors, the most important being the interest and availability of the Associated Site member. Other factors of consideration include the extent of movement disorder experience and current practice, support from the local VA administration, and the geographic needs of the VA PD Network. Interested members are encouraged to contact the PADRECC Coordinating Center to discuss this opportunity. Additionally, the PADRECC Executive Committee will independently extend invitations based on the needs of the VA PD Network.

Membership Application (please email the completed form to Dawn McHale, National Coordinator, at dawn.mchale@va.gov)
